it was a surprise to see Buddha emerging from the forest floor, but a good one. I find depiction of Buddha to be immensely calming. He is the embodiment of peace, but then he is the embodiment of everything and everyone. Experiments. I just put a brush to paper and see what emerges. It's liberating because it's such low stakes. It really doesn't matter if it's good or not. I can go wherever I like. These are not studies for bigger pieces. More like little improvisations. Practise. Exersize. Expressing my creativity for its own sake. This means my brain is nice and limber for bigger pieces, which go through exactly the same process, but with higher stakes. What this rightness is I struggle to understand. But I know it when I see it. Just as I know "wrong" when I see it. Sometimes the rightness is not immediately obvious but comes with time. This happens when I reach a point when adding more to a piece seems to make it worse, but I'm not clear if rightness has been achieved. I assume rightness is subjective, but this also suggests that it is temporal. I'm fascinated by this idea of rightness, which seems intrinsic to the process of creation. The trick then is to know when to stop, even when you don't want to. When you just want to keep painting because the sensations and focus are so delightful.
